Chapter 13
D Ex Machina
Alex and I hit the deck about the same time. The grenade went off, breaking the windows, tearing holes in the cheap walls, and blasting the doors off the hinges.
Between the shooting, the fighting, and the explosion, my head was ringing. I was largely deaf, and I couldnât focus enough to make certain that I could hit between the door frame.
I rolled over on my back, gun up, and hoped that I could hold it up long enough to dissuade the gunmen from coming in. Heck, given the state my head was in, I was hoping that I could aim through the dust and the smoke from the explosion.
The ringing in my ears stayed with me, muffling everything, even the sound of automatic fire. There were no bullet strikes. I heard no return fire from Alex. Whatâs happening out there?
As my hearing cleared after a minute or two, the automatic fire was still going. Only this time, it was coming from outside.
Did the cops arrive and bring SWAT?
More shots came from inside this time. They were gone in seconds.
After a moment of silence, two hands slowly came into view in the door frame, as though someone were holding their hands up. They were big and black, and I recognized some of the rings.
I lowered my gun and called out, âD?â
The gang leader stepped into view. His black leather jacket and dress pants were immaculate. Despite all of the dust in the air, he was untouched. He gave me a big grin, then reached down, offering me his hand. I took it, and he hauled me off the floor.
âHow you doing, man?â he asked casually. I had to read his lips since my hearing was still on the fritz.
âYouâll have to speak up a little,â I answered. âBut when my hearing comes back. I should be fine.â I looked down at my body. There were no holes or perforations. âWhere did you come from?â
He shrugged. âMe and mine were down the street, checking out a local establishment that we had considered purchasing.â
I frowned, thinking that over. Then I realized that Alex wasnât joining us. âPackard.â
D moved out of the way so I could come through. I went straight to the other office as I stepped over the bodies in the hallway. Alex was on the floor, his body covering the girlâs. In turn, the girlâs body was almost wrapped around the baby.
I stepped over and tapped Alex on the shoulder. He started, and his gun stopped halfway to me. âOh. Hi.â
I gave him a little finger wave. I didnât see any holes in him, and it was going to be awkward enough with one of us half deaf. I turned back to D and noted that no one else was with him. âWhere are the others?â
D grinned. âOthers? What others? I just showed up, Detective. Why would you think I had anything to do with how these pitiful miscreants met their end?â
I blinked, taken aback. If thatâs how he wanted to play it, I wasnât going to argue with him.
